I used these as bathroom lights over 2 sinks. My contractor installed a dimmer (do not use florescent bulbs with dimmers). The fixtures can be positioned up (for indirect light) or down (which makes them brighter).

We needed to replace the light over an existing medicine cabinet. This fixture can be installed with the lights either facing up or down. The shade extends 8" from the wall, so if you are planning to mount the lights in the down position above a cabinet, you need to make sure that bottom of the circuit box is at least 10" above the cabinet door swing. We mounted the lights facing up because we didn't have enough clearance to mount the lights down, and we get ample lighting bouncing off the ceiling to illuminate the mirror for shaving and makeup.
A licensed electrician installed the fixture for us, but it could be installed by any novice who remembers to turn off the power to the circuit.
