In Holland, Christmas celebrations last almost the entire month of December, beginning the 6th. It is on this day, St. Nicholas day, that Sinter Klaas comes to Amsterdam by boat on one of the city's many canals. People come to the streets to greet him in his bishop attire with his mitre in hand. He then rides his white horse to the royal palace where all the children are waiting to tell him about their behavior during the past year.
