We needed a light fixture for the dinning room of our new home that we wouldn't bang our heads on, since we were not putting the dinning room table under the current light fixture (a drop down chandilier of sorts). We needed something that was dressy enough for the room that hung a maximum of 10" from the ceiling. This light works very well for that purpose.
